Two individuals lost their lives and nearly 40 others were injured following a collision between a Greyhound bus and a passenger vehicle on a highway in Madison County, Tennessee, authorities reported.
The incident occurred Monday evening, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Emergency responders from Madison County Fire Rescue confirmed that approximately 27 injured individuals required transport by ambulance for further medical care.
According to Jason Pack, a special agent and spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, at least one of the fatalities was a passenger inside the vehicle involved in the crash.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is conducting an ongoing investigation, which includes reconstructing the crash scene and examining the mechanical aspects of the bus.
A Greyhound representative stated that the bus was en route from Memphis to Nashville, carrying 32 passengers, a driver, and a backup driver at the time of the accident. Most of the injured passengers who were hospitalized have since been discharged.
Authorities have released limited information as the investigation continues.
