Alaska Airlines Announces Inaugural European Route
Alaska Airlines is set to make its entry into the European market with new nonstop flights between Seattle and Rome, beginning in May next year. This marks a significant milestone for the Seattle-based carrier as it expands its international footprint.
Flight Details and Fleet Utilization
The airline will operate four flights per week on this route using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets. These long-haul aircraft became part of Alaska Airlines’ fleet following its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines last year, enabling the new service to Europe.
Strategic Expansion Plans
Alaska Airlines aims to establish Seattle as a global travel hub, targeting major international markets throughout the remainder of the decade. According to Andrew Harrison, Alaska’s Chief Commercial Officer, the company is committed to building a robust global gateway from Seattle to meet strong market demand.
Customer Demand and Market Trends
- Rome was a popular destination among Alaska’s Mileage Plan loyalty program members, prompting the launch of this route.
- Italy continues to be a favored destination, leading major international carriers to increase direct services including new nonstop flights to Sicily and other Italian cities.
Recent and Upcoming International Services
Earlier this year, Alaska began flights to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport, with plans to start service to Seoul in September. The Tokyo route is performing well, operating at around 80% capacity. These Asian routes are also expected to enhance the airline’s cargo revenue.
Regulatory Approval and Future Outlook
To fully integrate Hawaiian Airlines’ fleet within Alaska’s operations, the airline is awaiting Federal Aviation Administration approval to operate under a unified certification. This approval is anticipated in the fourth quarter, facilitating smoother management of the expanded fleet for international services.
