Tragic Violence Erupts in Nigeria’s Benue State
In a devastating assault that unfolded late Friday night into early Saturday, at least 100 people were killed in the village of Yelewata, located in Nigeria’s central Benue state. The chilling attack, carried out by armed gunmen, has left numerous individuals missing, while many others suffer injuries without access to adequate medical treatment.

“The continuing spree of attacks by gunmen in Benue has been carried out with shocking impunity,” Amnesty noted. This persistent violence has triggered widespread displacement and threatens food security in the region, especially since many victims rely on farming for their livelihoods.
Benue State: A Flashpoint in Nigeria’s Middle Belt
Strategically situated between Nigeria's predominantly Muslim North and largely Christian South, Benue state is often the epicenter of clashes between herders seeking grazing grounds and farmers defending their crops. These disputes over land frequently escalate, exacerbated by ethnic and religious animosities that have deep historical roots.
Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Impact
Last month, similar attacks attributed to suspected herders resulted in the deaths of at least 42 people across the Gwer West district. Since 2019, such conflicts have claimed over 500 lives and displaced approximately 2.2 million people according to local intelligence sources. The ongoing crisis not only threatens lives but also disrupts agriculture, posing risks to regional food supplies.
