Bangladesh Declares National Holiday to Commemorate Sheikh Hasina's Ouster
Bangladesh is set to observe August 5 as a national holiday, marking one year since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The interim government has announced this day as Student-People's Uprising Day, commemorating the events that unfolded when Sheikh Hasina fled the country amid turmoil.
Events Leading to the Ouster
On the day in question, a violent mob marched towards Sheikh Hasina's official residence, prompting serious security concerns that forced her to leave the country. Shortly after, rioters pillaged the Gana Bhavan premises, escalating the unrest. This pivotal moment marked the end of Hasina's government and the start of an interim administration.
Commemorative Activities and July Charter
The interim government revealed plans to organize a series of programs between July 14 and August 5 to honor the uprising. Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki disclosed in a press conference that a committee has been established to prepare the July Charter, outlining the demands voiced during the Student-People's Uprising.
Political Repercussions and Rising Tensions
The Bangladesh Awami League, ousted in the upheaval, claims that the protests were encouraged by Islamic radical groups and characterize the events as a deliberate assassination attempt on Sheikh Hasina. Since the government's fall, minority communities, particularly Hindus, have reportedly faced increased attacks.
Furthermore, the Awami League accuses the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of releasing individuals convicted of terrorist activities. Earlier this year, Bangladesh’s Election Commission suspended the Awami League's registration and barred it from contesting forthcoming elections under anti-terror legislation, casting doubt over the fairness of upcoming polls.
Looking Ahead: Possible Elections Before Ramadan
General elections are anticipated before the next Ramadan. This prospect followed a recent London meeting between Muhammad Yunus and Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The political landscape continues to evolve as the country navigates this period of transition.
