China Accelerates Evacuations as Iran-Israel Tensions Heat Up
In response to escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, China has successfully evacuated more than 1,600 of its citizens from Iran along with hundreds from Israel. The intensifying conflict has heightened concerns for the safety of foreign nationals amid growing unrest.
Diplomatic Efforts and Communication
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, confirmed ongoing evacuation operations during a regular press briefing. He emphasized that China continues to maintain communication with governments in Iran, Israel, Egypt, and Oman. Urging all involved parties—especially Israel—to institute an immediate cessation of fire, Guo called for swift action to de-escalate the situation.
Safe Passage Routes for Evacuees
To facilitate safer exit routes, the Chinese embassy in Tehran has advised its citizens to leave Iran through land borders, including crossings into Azerbaijan via Astara and into Turkmenistan via Bajgiran. However, these checkpoints have experienced significant congestion, delaying immigration processing. The Astara crossing lies approximately 490 km from Tehran, while Bajgiran is around 910 km away. Additional safe routes include border crossings into Turkey, Armenia, and Iraq.
Regarding the evacuation from Israel, the Chinese embassy announced a phased operation beginning Friday. Those opting to leave will be transported by bus to the Taba Border Crossing leading into Egypt—roughly 360 km from Tel Aviv.
Recent Developments in the Conflict
The conflict shows little sign of abating nearly a week after Israel launched what it described as "pre-emptive strikes" against Iran. On Thursday, Israel targeted a significant Iranian nuclear facility, prompting missile strikes from Iran that hit an Israeli hospital.
Looking Ahead
As tensions remain high, China’s efforts highlight the urgency of safeguarding its citizens abroad and reflect diplomatic calls for calm. The situation underscores the fragile balance in the region and the critical need for immediate de-escalation.
