Chinese Gratitude for Indian Navy's Prompt Rescue Efforts
China has expressed sincere thanks to India following the successful rescue of the crew aboard the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel MV Wan Hai 503, which caught fire and suffered an explosion off the Kerala coast on June 9.
Details of the Incident
The MV Wan Hai 503 was en route from Colombo to Nhava Sheva near Mumbai when a severe onboard explosion ignited a massive fire approximately 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal, Kerala. The vessel is currently adrift near the coast.
Crew Information and Rescue Status
- 22 crew members were on board during the incident.
- Of these, 14 are Chinese nationals, including 6 from Taiwan.
- 18 crew members have been rescued.
- Four individuals remain missing, and five were injured during the explosion.
China hopes the ongoing search operations will successfully locate those missing and wishes a fast recovery for the injured.
Indian Authorities and Rescue Operations
The Indian Navy and the Mumbai Coast Guard acted swiftly and professionally to carry out the rescue mission. Their prompt response was crucial in reaching the crew members amidst challenging conditions.
Environmental Concerns and Monitoring
The explosion reportedly originated inside one of the ship's containers, causing a widespread fire onboard. Following the accident, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) activated its Search and Rescue Aid Tool (SARAT) to monitor potential drift patterns of debris, containers, or any crew members who might have gone overboard.
There is also concern about a possible oil spill. Although the amount has not yet been confirmed, forecast simulations project that any spillage would drift parallel to the coastline between June 10 and June 13. Continuous monitoring is underway to mitigate environmental risks.
Local authorities have been urged to intensify coastal surveillance and prepare for any navigational or shoreline hazards that may arise from the incident.
Looking Ahead
This incident highlights the importance of international cooperation in maritime safety and emergency response. China's official spokesperson acknowledged and appreciated the Indian Navy and Coast Guard's professionalism and dedication, underscoring the strong bilateral ties in managing maritime crises.
