Couple Transforms Kentucky Homestead with $13,000 in DIY Renovations

From Vision to Reality: The Search for a Rural Homestead

In 2023, Sophie Hilaire Goldie and Rocky Goldie embarked on a journey to find a homestead that matched their shared dream of living off the land. Their criteria were clear: a property with at least 10 acres located deep in rural Kentucky, rich in history and offering the potential for transformation.

Despite initial challenges finding a suitable fixer-upper, a connection with a local realtor led them to a 37.5-acre homestead featuring two log cabins from the 1840s, combined into a 2,200-square-foot home with four bedrooms and one bathroom, along with a smaller cabin and two barns. The property was listed at approximately $390,000.

Assessing and Acquiring a Neglected Property

When Sophie and Rocky first visited the homestead, it was overrun with poison ivy, cracked sidewalks, and scattered garbage. While Rocky expressed some hesitation due to the extensive work required, Sophie's optimism helped seal their decision to purchase the property.

They closed on the homestead in early 2024 with a 30-year mortgage and a monthly payment of $1,790.18, planning to repay it within five years. Since moving in, they have invested approximately $13,000 in renovations and tools, dedicating countless hours to clearing the land and tackling infestations, including dangerous brown recluse spiders.

Renovation Efforts and Building Sustainability

The couple has harmonized their love for antiques and hands-on work by restoring the home’s interiors and bringing the grounds to life. Their additions include:

  • A garden
  • Fruit and nut trees
  • Over 30 animals, such as chickens, goats, guinea fowls, and cats

They strive for self-sufficiency by consuming eggs from their chickens and milk from their goat, producing cheese and baked goods. They also plan to establish a canning room to preserve food for year-round use, inspired by local neighbors.

Mindset and Lessons Learned

Sophie describes their first year in two parts: the physical exertion of clearing and maintaining the property, and the shift in mindset required to embrace a homesteading lifestyle. The couple regards the process as both challenging and rewarding, underscoring the transformative power of human stewardship over neglected land.

Rocky reflects on his personal growth, having left a long career in maintenance and military service to embrace homesteading full time. He emphasizes the importance of detaching identity from career, noting newfound peace and fulfillment in their lifestyle.

Future Plans and Commitment

Sophie and Rocky have no intention of selling their Kentucky homestead. They look forward to completing major projects and eventually dedicating time to hobbies and leisure, while continuing to expand Sophie’s skincare company, Seoul + Soil, inspired by their lifestyle.

Both envision a future where they can balance learning, applying knowledge, and enjoying the tranquility of their rural home, embodying a peaceful and purposeful existence.
