As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, airlines worldwide have taken precautionary measures by suspending or reducing flights in and around the Middle East. This move follows recent U.S. military strikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites, deepening regional unrest.
US Strikes Escalate Regional Tensions
Over the weekend, the United States launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities after a week marked by deadly missile exchanges between Israel and Iran. The escalating violence has prompted airlines to reassess flight safety across the region, resulting in widespread cancellations and route suspensions.
European Airlines Adjust Operations
- British Airways canceled flights between London Heathrow and Dubai and Doha on Sunday, though it aims to resume normal scheduling shortly.
- Air France halted flights to Saudi Arabia and the UAE until at least Tuesday and extended the suspension of its Paris-Tel Aviv route through July 14. Its budget carrier Transavia has suspended Paris-Beirut flights until June 30 and delayed Tel Aviv service until September 7.
- Lufthansa Group, including Swiss, Austrian, and ITA airlines, suspended Middle East flights through June 30, with additional suspensions to Amman and Erbil until July 11. Flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran remain halted until July 31, as the group avoids airspace over conflict zones.
- Aegean Airlines paused Tel Aviv flights until July 12 and suspended routes to Amman, Beirut, and Erbil through June 28.
- Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines have canceled flights to various regional destinations including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Dammam, Kuwait, and Iran, with suspensions extending into July.
- Finnair suspended flights to Doha and is steering clear of Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian, and Israeli airspace to ensure passenger safety.
North American Carriers Respond
- United Airlines has warned that flights to and from Dubai scheduled between June 18 and July 3 could be disrupted, offering passengers flexibility with ticket changes. Similar measures apply to Tel Aviv flights through August 1, including alternative travel options via European cities.
- Air Canada paused its daily nonstop service from Toronto to Dubai starting June 18, with the possibility of extending the suspension. Passengers can still travel to Dubai via European partner airlines.
- American Airlines provides no-fee booking changes for flights to Doha originally booked between June 19 and July 20.
Asian Airlines Also Curtail Flights
Singapore Airlines canceled eight flights to Dubai over a four-day span, reducing frequency to prioritize safety amid escalating hostilities.
