India Applauds Iran-Israel Ceasefire Amid Regional Concerns
On Tuesday, India expressed its approval of the recently announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel, bringing a pause to nearly two weeks of intense conflict. While welcoming this development, the government also voiced ongoing concerns about the prospects for long-term peace and stability in West Asia.
Diplomatic Efforts Recognized
The Ministry of External Affairs praised the efforts of international mediators, notably the United States and Qatar, for their instrumental role in brokering the ceasefire. "We remain deeply concerned about regional security and stability, but we welcome the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, and appreciate the role played by the US and Qatar in facilitating it," the ministry said.
Monitoring a Volatile Situation
India has been closely watching developments, including recent US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on American military bases in Qatar. The government emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable solution to the deep-rooted conflicts in the region, reaffirming readiness to support efforts toward lasting peace.
Strategic Ties and the Indian Diaspora at Stake
India maintains strong diplomatic relations with both Iran and Israel and has consistently called for restraint since the violence erupted with Israeli airstrikes on June 13. The escalation raised significant concerns given West Asia’s vital role as an energy supplier to India and as home to a large Indian community.
- Over 9 million Indians reside across West Asia.
- More than 10,000 Indians, including many students, live in Iran.
- India has evacuated nearly 3,200 nationals from both Iran and Israel.
- In Israel, more than 32,000 Indians reside.
Maintaining a Balanced Stance
Notably, India distanced itself from a statement issued by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) that condemned Israel’s attacks on Iran. This reflects India’s nuanced approach in managing its interests and relationships in a complex geopolitical landscape.
Looking Ahead: Peace Through Dialogue
As tensions ease temporarily with the ceasefire, India urges a renewed focus on dialogue and diplomatic engagement as indispensable tools for lasting resolution. The government’s stance highlights its commitment to peace and stability not only in West Asia but also in the broader international community.
