A Landmark Through Time: The Story of Café General
Nestled opposite Girgaon Chowpatty, Café General has been a beloved fixture for over a century. What began as a simple provision store in the early 1900s has transformed through eras of change—from World Wars to Independence—and evolved into a cherished hub for locals, college students, and seafood lovers alike.
From Humble Beginnings to a Neighborhood Staple
The story traces back to the early 1900s when a young immigrant, Rustom Sheriar Irani, journeyed from Iran and established Café General & Stores. Initially, it was a typical Irani provision store stocked with essentials like chocolates, butter, biscuits, soaps, and razors. During the financial strain of World War II, the business downsized, reflecting tough economic times.
Rustom’s son, Sheriar Irani, witnessed the necessary cutbacks firsthand. “They had to close by 6 pm just to keep up with rent,” recalls his grandson Rustom, the current custodian.
Transitioning to a Café and Culinary Destination
Following India's independence, the store gradually transformed into a café. Sheriar and his brother Shapur began serving classic snacks like samosas, bun maska, and mutton pattice, quickly becoming a gathering spot where locals enjoyed tea and newspapers.
By the 1980s, Café General blossomed into a full-fledged restaurant and bar. The menu diversified with Mughlai, Indian-Chinese, and signature Parsi dishes. An air-conditioned section and ice cream parlor added to its allure. Childhood memories include sharing mango and raspberry ice cream duets after school, as the current owner fondly shares.
A Hub for Stories, Nostalgia, and Famous Guests
Generations have passed through Café General’s doors, building a loyal clientele. Patrons often reminisce about how their families have dined here across decades. Among the notable visitors was actor Jackie Shroff, who frequented the café during his early days living nearby. The café has also welcomed numerous cricketers, especially Ranji Trophy players, shaping its reputation as a community favorite.
Modern Flavors Meet Tradition
Innovating with Passion
Rustom, the third-generation owner and a hospitality graduate, took full reins over a decade ago after completing his studies. Inspired to innovate, he began modernizing the menu. Signature dishes like crispy paneer now come smothered in creamy white sauce with bell peppers and olives, while sizzlers boast chicken lollipops draped in cheese over rice. Pizzas, burgers, and fast food items now join classic offerings.
Must-Try Delights
- Veg Shashlik: Batter-fried vegetables with a sweet-spicy Indo-Chinese sauce served on rice
- Chilli Paneer: A spicy, tangy favorite among regulars
- Parsi coconut-based curry: Mildly spiced and available in veg or chicken options
- Salli Boti: Tender mutton in rich tomato gravy topped with crispy potato sticks
The café also operates a Gupta Kulfi franchise, famed for its towering faloodas and refreshing kulfis, perfect for enjoying the sea breeze.
A Space That Reflects Change and Tradition
The café’s interiors got a fresh makeover six years ago, trading old marble tables and bentwood chairs for relaxed café-style seating. The walls now feature vibrant beer posters, Harley-Davidson signs, and cozy faux grass patches. Yet, one prominent wall honors the past with black-and-white photographs showcasing the café’s heritage and the Girgaon shoreline.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Legacy
Unlike many Parsi eateries struggling to survive, Café General not only endures but thrives by attracting younger crowds, especially college students, alongside longtime patrons. Rustom is optimistic about expansion plans, with hopes to open a new branch between Bandra and Andheri to reconnect with customers who’ve migrated to the suburbs.
With a century’s worth of history blending seamlessly with contemporary flavors, Café General remains a thriving testament to Mumbai’s rich cultural tapestry and enduring love for good food by the sea.
