Tensions Soar as Iran’s Supreme Leader Responds to US Threats
In a sharply intensifying conflict, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared “the battle begins” following provocative remarks from the US President. The escalation unfolded after Iran launched ballistic missile attacks targeting Israel, triggering immediate retaliatory airstrikes on Tehran and Karaj.
Khamenei’s Defiant Message and Missile Barrage
Khamenei issued a series of posts in the early hours of Wednesday, condemning Israel as the “terrorist Zionist regime” and vowing a formidable response. His statement came hours after the US President called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” On social media, Khamenei warned the Zionists would face no mercy, underpinning a broader ideological clash. A notable post included imagery referencing the historic Battle of Khaybar, symbolizing resistance and conflict.
Shortly before these statements, Iran launched two rounds of ballistic missiles towards Israeli territory:
- First wave: Approximately 15 projectiles fired around 12:40 a.m., setting off nationwide sirens in Israel.
- Second wave: Roughly 10 rockets followed about 40 minutes later, triggering alarms in central Israel and the West Bank.
Despite the attacks, there were no casualties reported, though a fire broke out in a central parking lot in Israel, damaging several vehicles. Authorities also detected suspected drone infiltration near the Dead Sea, heightening alert levels further.
US President’s Provocative Warnings
In a series of posts earlier, the US President asserted full control over Iranian airspace, emphasizing that Iran’s Supreme Leader was within reach but not an immediate target. He warned, “We don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.” These messages were followed by a stark call demanding Iran’s unconditional surrender.
Israeli Airstrikes Hit Tehran and Karaj
Countering the missile attacks, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched fresh airstrikes targeting strategic locations in Iran’s capital and nearby Karaj, known for its nuclear facilities. Residents of Tehran’s District 18 were ordered to evacuate in preparation for these strikes. The offensive, which began six days ago, aims to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities deemed existential threats by Israel.
Israel’s Campaign Objectives
- Neutralize senior Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists.
- Destroy missile launch sites and uranium enrichment centers.
The Human Toll and Ongoing Conflict
The spiraling conflict has resulted in substantial casualties. Iranian reports cite at least 224 fatalities caused by Israeli airstrikes. Conversely, Israel has faced relentless attacks with over 370 missiles and hundreds of drones launched by Iran, resulting in 24 deaths and more than 500 wounded within Israel.
As tensions escalate, the stakes remain high with a volatile mix of military action and rhetorical escalation signaling no immediate end to the confrontation.
