Jaishankar Launches Week-Long European Tour to Bolster Diplomatic Relations
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has set off on a significant week-long journey across Europe, aiming to deepen partnerships with France, the European Union, and Belgium. Central to this mission is reaffirming India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, particularly in the aftermath of recent security challenges.
First Stop: Strategic Engagement with France
Jaishankar’s tour kicks off in France, one of India’s trusted allies. During his visit to Paris and Marseille, he is scheduled to meet with Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs. This dialogue is expected to focus on reinforcing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Moreover, Jaishankar will participate in the inaugural Mediterranean edition of the Raisina Dialogue in Marseille, a prominent forum fostering international strategic discussions.
Strengthening Ties with the European Union in Brussels
Next, the External Affairs Minister will travel to Brussels to engage in a high-level strategic dialogue with Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative and Vice President. The interaction underscores the growing bond between India and the European Union, which saw a historic moment earlier this year when the EU College of Commissioners visited India for the first time.
Along with meetings involving senior officials from the European Commission and European Parliament, Jaishankar will connect with think tanks and media representatives, emphasizing transparency and mutual understanding.
Closing the Visit with In-Depth Discussions in Belgium
In the final phase of his trip, Jaishankar will hold comprehensive talks with Belgian leaders, including a bilateral meeting with Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot.
India and Belgium share warm relations, backed by dynamic collaboration in trade, green energy, technology, pharmaceuticals, diamonds, and vibrant people-to-people exchanges. This visit aims to further invigorate these economic and cultural ties.
Context: India’s Zero-Tolerance Policy on Terrorism
The minister’s European tour gains added significance against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, India's swift and decisive response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Jaishankar is poised to assert India’s firm commitment to combating terrorism and rally international support for counterterrorism efforts.
Overall, this strategic journey plays a crucial role in reinforcing India’s position on global security while nurturing vital international partnerships.
