South Korean low-cost carrier Jeju Air experienced a safety incident when Flight 2217 briefly deviated from its landing path at Da Nang International Airport in Vietnam. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, carrying 183 passengers from Incheon, safely corrected its course and landed without injuries, although the landing gear tires were damaged.
The event occurred around 12:50 AM local time on Tuesday. Following the incident, Jeju Air promptly replaced the damaged tires at Da Nang and deployed a replacement Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the return flight, which departed approximately 14 hours and 38 minutes later than originally scheduled at 4:08 PM on the same day.
Jeju Air’s fleet primarily consists of Boeing 737-800 models, including the aircraft involved in this recent episode as well as the previously involved Flight 2216. South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the deviation.
This incident follows a serious accident on December 29, 2024, when Jeju Air Flight 2216 crash-landed at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province. That flight slid off the runway, collided with a berm surrounding a concrete structure, caught fire, and tragically resulted in numerous fatalities, with only two crew members surviving.
