King Charles III Celebrates Yoga’s Rising Influence in the UK
On the occasion of International Yoga Day, hundreds gathered at London’s iconic Strand to participate in an evening of expert-led yoga sessions, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices. The event, organized by the High Commission of India in London in partnership with King's College London, marked the 10th anniversary of the global celebration.
A Royal Endorsement Emphasizing Unity and Wellbeing
Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami inaugurated the event by reading a special message from King Charles III, who is well-known for his support of yoga. The 76-year-old monarch praised the annual celebration for promoting global values of unity, compassion, and health.
Quoting the King’s message from Buckingham Palace: "Yoga for One Earth, One Health" – the theme for 2024 – underscores the critical need for worldwide collaboration to ensure a thriving future for today’s and tomorrow’s generations.
King Charles highlighted how yoga continues to gain momentum throughout the UK, with millions embracing its benefits. He described yoga as a profound tool for enhancing both physical and mental wellbeing, while also fostering a sense of community.
Reflecting on Yoga’s Global Journey
High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami reflected on how Yoga Day originated from a 2014 United Nations resolution, inspired by an initiative from India’s Prime Minister. Over the past decade, the celebration has earned universal acclaim, symbolizing a shared human experience that transcends borders, languages, and beliefs.
He emphasized that yoga speaks a universal language of healing, touching the lives of people regardless of cultural or geographical differences.
Strengthening UK-India Ties Through Wellness
The event’s collaboration with King's College London echoed this spirit of partnership. Graham Lord, Senior Vice-President for Health and Life Sciences at King's College, expressed enthusiasm about future collaborations with the Indian High Commission and the strengthening ties between the UK and India—especially following their recent Free Trade Agreement.
He noted that the college shares yoga’s values of wellness, community, and inner peace, making it a natural venue for such celebrations.
An Evening Full of Movement, Music, and Mindfulness
The program kicked off with 'Drums of India' performed by Bhavan UK, followed by sessions on Surya Namaskar and Iyengar Yoga. Experts from Heartfulness UK, Art of Living, and Isha Foundation guided attendees through breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques.
The day’s events culminated in 'Samagam', a vibrant fusion of yoga and dance, symbolizing harmony and collective wellbeing.
Global Celebration of Yoga
International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, draws millions worldwide to embrace a practice that nurtures body, mind, and spirit. The London event continues to inspire greater participation and deepen public appreciation for yoga’s enduring benefits.
