Pakistan Proposes Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistan has officially nominated former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his role in easing escalating tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbors, India and Pakistan. The nomination highlights what Pakistani officials describe as Trump’s "decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership" during the recent crisis.
Trump Claims Award for Multiple Peace Efforts
He further asserted during a press interaction, “I stopped a war… I love Pakistan. I think Modi is a fantastic man. I spoke to him last night. We're going to make a trade deal with Modi of India. But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India. This man was extremely influential from the Pakistan side. Modi from the India side and others. They were going at it – and they're both nuclear countries. I got it stopped.”
Official Endorsements and Upcoming White House Meeting
Backing the nomination, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, has arranged a forthcoming lunch meeting with the White House, confirmed by spokesperson Anna Kelly, though no specific date has been set. This event underscores the diplomatic weight Islamabad places on Trump’s perceived role in calming regional hostility.
Trump’s Peace Push Extends to Africa
In addition to South Asia, Trump announced a peace treaty agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, brokered during recent negotiations in Washington. He shared the news on social media, heralding it as a "Great Day for Africa and, quite frankly, a Great Day for the World." The treaty aims to resolve a long-standing conflict in eastern Congo.
According to Trump, officials from both countries are expected to travel to Washington by late June to formalize the agreement, marking a significant step toward stability in the region.
Trump Highlights Past Peace Efforts Amidst Criticism
Despite these efforts, Trump has voiced frustration over the Nobel Committee’s apparent reluctance to recognize his contributions. He pointed out several notable conflicts where he claims to have played a peacekeeping role, including tensions between Serbia and Kosovo, as well as Egypt and Ethiopia. “No, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do... but the people know, and that’s all that matters to me!”
Mixed Global Context
While Trump positions himself as a global peacemaker, it's important to note that longstanding conflicts such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine remain unresolved more than five months into his presidency, highlighting the complex challenges international diplomacy continues to face.
A Legacy of Nobel Peace Prize Nominations
This is not the first time Trump has been put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize. Previous nominations have come from loyal lawmakers and supporters, often accompanied by his vocal dissatisfaction for being overlooked—particularly when contrasted with former President Barack Obama’s 2009 award.
