Mark Carney: Trump’s Annexation Ambitions for Canada Fade
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has publicly stated that U.S. President Donald Trump no longer appears interested in turning Canada into the 51st state. Speaking in an interview on June 24, 2025, Carney remarked that while Trump once coveted Canada, that ambition has since diminished.
From Coveting to Admiring: A Shift in Tone
When questioned about Trump’s current stance toward Canada, Carney responded emphatically, “No.” He noted that Trump now simply “admires Canada”, signalling a clear departure from previous rhetoric. Carney’s remarks come after mixed messages from the U.S. administration in recent weeks.
Mixed Signals from Washington
Earlier in May 2025, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Peter Hoekstra, confirmed that Trump was no longer discussing annexation plans. Yet, just days later, Trump himself revived the idea on his social media platform, Truth Social, suggesting Canada could join the U.S. without cost under his so-called “Golden Dome System.” Trump stated, “It will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!”
Carney Highlights Positive Impacts Despite Rivalry
Despite acknowledging a cooler phase in relations — with Carney even suggesting the traditionally close Canada-U.S. partnership is "over" — he credits Trump for pushing Canada toward increased defense spending. Carney said that the U.S. president has been instrumental in urging NATO allies, including Canada, to “pay their fair share.” Canada has since boosted its defense budget accordingly.
Trump’s Influence on Global Affairs
Turning to global matters, Carney recognized Trump’s capacity to wield significant influence, especially in West Asia. Referring to the volatile situations in Gaza and Iran, Carney noted the “moral imperative to move forward” and acknowledged how Trump’s exercise of American power could potentially advance resolution efforts.
Looking Ahead
As Canada and the United States navigate this complex chapter, Carney’s insights shed light on a nuanced relationship. While annexation talks have receded, the interplay between cooperation, competition, and diplomacy continues to define their dynamic.
