PM Modi Pays Tribute to Argentina’s National Hero
On July 5, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored General José de San Martín, one of Argentina’s most revered freedom fighters, by laying a wreath at his memorial in Buenos Aires. San Martín is celebrated as a liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and his legacy symbolizes courage and patriotism for millions across South America.
The monument, crafted by French sculptor Louis Joseph Daumas in 1862, stands as a lasting tribute to his leadership during the region's fight for independence.
Sharing his homage on social media, PM Modi remarked, "His courage and leadership played a pivotal role in Argentina’s history. His life remains a symbol of patriotism and determination for the people of Argentina."
Strengthening Bilateral Relations at Casa Rosada
Following the memorial ceremony, Prime Minister Modi met with Argentine President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada, the official seat of Argentina’s government, for comprehensive bilateral talks. The discussions aimed at enhancing economic cooperation and expanding partnership across several strategic sectors.
This historic visit marks the first bilateral prime ministerial visit from India to Argentina in 57 years and is PM Modi’s second visit as India’s leader — his first being in 2018 during the G20 Summit.
