Six Protesters Detained Outside Palantir's New York Office
On Thursday, law enforcement detained six activists who were protesting outside Palantir Technologies’ Manhattan office. The demonstration was organized by the activist group Planet Over Profit, which opposed Palantir's involvement in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportations, military operations, and expansive surveillance programs.
Activists Voice Strong Objections to Palantir's Activities
The protest drew over 30 participants who sought to block the entrance to Palantir’s Chelsea location. Planet Over Profit articulated a sharp critique of the company, accusing it of "turbocharging ICE deportations," being complicit in violence against Palestinians, and planning to significantly increase surveillance of U.S. residents.
The group emphasized that Palantir’s technologies are implicated in a range of controversial actions, including facilitating deportations, involvement in civilian casualties in Gaza, promoting fossil fuel extraction, and denying health insurance claims. A representative from Planet Over Profit underscored their stance: "If your company kills for profit, we will disrupt you."
Company and CEO Under Scrutiny
Palantir did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the protest or the allegations. The company, known for its data analytics software, was co-founded by billionaire Peter Thiel and is led by CEO Alex Karp. Notably, Karp donated $1 million to former President Donald Trump's inauguration fund, highlighting the company's political involvement.
Palantir has drawn attention for its defense-related contracts as well as its work with government agencies like ICE. In April, ICE reportedly paid Palantir $30 million to enhance visibility over individuals self-deporting.
Internal and External Controversies Surrounding Palantir’s Operations
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that some Palantir employees resigned due to CEO Karp’s public support for Israel amidst ongoing conflict. Karp openly expressed pride in the company’s operational role in Israel following the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas, indicating involvement in critical missions on the ground.
Despite the controversies, Palantir's stock has surged dramatically, climbing nearly 500% over the past year and reaching new highs recently.
Current Status of Detained Protestors
All six protestors who were detained have since been released. It remains unclear if any charges were filed.
