At least 10 individuals lost their lives and six others were injured following a devastating rock collapse at a quarry in Cirebon district, West Java, Indonesia, on Friday.
The incident occurred in a natural stone quarry, where footage revealed excavators engaged in rescue efforts amid unstable terrain. Rescue teams were seen transferring bodies from the rubble to ambulances as search operations continued to locate additional victims potentially buried under the debris.
The national disaster management authority reported that the collapse also engulfed heavy equipment, including three excavators. Efforts to clear the site and continue rescue operations are scheduled to proceed into Saturday, although authorities have not specified the total number of missing persons.
West Java’s governor, Dedi Mulyadi, commented on the tragedy via social media, highlighting that the quarry site was hazardous and did not adhere to established safety standards necessary for protecting workers.
Rescue teams remain committed to recovering any survivors and investigating the circumstances leading to the structural failure at the quarry.
