New Veteran Support Centre Opens in Scarborough
A dedicated hub to support military veterans and their families has officially opened its doors in Scarborough. This new centre, managed by Age UK and backed by the Veterans' Foundation, offers a range of services including drop-in information sessions, training opportunities, and social activities tailored to the needs of the armed forces community.
Paul Ratcliffe, an army veteran and volunteer with Age UK, emphasized the importance of this initiative. Reflecting on his own 22 years of service, he described transitioning to civilian life as a daunting experience, where simple tasks like finding a doctor, dentist, or housing become unexpectedly challenging. "There’s a gap in the market for a place that brings the armed forces community together to provide comprehensive support," he said.
Ratcliffe added that many former service members find comfort in connecting with others who understand their unique experiences. "Getting together to share memories and support each other really helps, and that’s exactly what we’re aiming to foster here," he noted.
A Central Resource for North Yorkshire's Armed Forces Community
Dr Lori Boul, who leads the Armed Forces Community and Veterans Hub, highlighted the significance of having a physical location in North Yorkshire. "The armed forces community has served us all, so it’s only right we serve them in return," she said. Dr Boul invited veterans, current personnel, and their families to visit for a friendly chat or a cup of coffee, whether or not they require assistance.
The hub’s opening coincided with Scarborough's Armed Forces Week and was marked by Scarborough Mayor Thomas Murray. He called the new centre a valuable asset, noting the persistent gaps in veteran support services due to overstretched charities and resources. The hub operates at Royal Avenue on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 to 16:00.

On the ground, musical performances will be provided throughout the day by groups including the Norwegian Marching Bands, Yorkshire Volunteers Band, Scarborough Sea Cadet Band, and East Riding Pipe Band, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.
Formal Ceremonies and Veteran Recognition
Official proceedings will include a standards review by Councillor George Jabbour and addresses by Brigadier David Colthup CBE. Veterans will receive special recognition through speeches and heartfelt tributes. A dedicated Veterans’ Village offers a welcoming space for veterans to connect with support organizations, access advice on health and housing, and register for the Defence Privilege Card, which provides useful discounts.
Naval Warfare Spectacle at Peasholm Park
Adding to the festivities, Peasholm Park will host the famed Naval Warfare show at 3 pm. The park's lake will transform into a battlefield featuring 20-foot replica warships engaging in a dramatic reenactment complete with explosions and smoke. This cherished local tradition pays homage to naval history and the bravery of those who serve.
Traffic and Accessibility Notices
Attendees are advised of extensive road closures around the event zone from 5 am to midnight on June 28. Key areas affected include Blands Cliff, Eastborough, Foreshore Road, Quay Street, and several car parks. Vehicle removal policies will be strictly enforced, including for Blue Badge holders, though arrangements are being arranged for those with special medical needs.
Additionally, well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout the event, with organizers urging owners to keep pets leashed and clean up after them to maintain a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone.
