Snap Unveils Ambitious Plans for Next-Gen AR Glasses
Snapchat’s parent company, Snap, has just announced it will launch its sixth-generation augmented reality (AR) glasses in 2026. These new smart glasses, dubbed simply Specs, mark a departure from the previous "Spectacles" branding used in earlier editions.
Smaller, Lighter, and More Advanced
According to Snap, Specs will be both smaller and lighter than past models, making them more practical for everyday wear. While the company has yet to disclose pricing or an exact launch date, Specs promises to enhance how people engage with digital content overlaid onto the real world through AR technology.
Snap’s recent Spectacles iteration, released exclusively to developers, adopted a leasing model costing $99 per month over a year. Moving forward, Specs will target consumers directly, running on Snap's proprietary Snap OS operating system.
Powering AR with Enhanced AI Integration
One standout feature of Specs is expanded AI support for developers. In contrast to previous versions, where developers could only leverage OpenAI's GPT models, the new platform will allow a broader range of AI models. This flexibility aims to cultivate more innovative AR applications tailored for the smart glasses.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel expressed enthusiasm about the convergence of artificial intelligence and augmented reality, highlighting the opportunity to create more natural, human-centered computing experiences.
From Simple Wearables to AR Powerhouses
Snap’s first Spectacles debuted back in 2016, offering a straightforward functionality: capture and share short video clips on Snapchat for about $130. The 2021 update introduced AR overlays, allowing virtual images to seamlessly integrate with the real world through the lenses.
Since then, the competition has intensified significantly.
Rival Tech Giants Stepping Up
- Meta launched its high-end Project Cambria VR headset priced at $3,500 in early 2024, along with a lineup including Quest VR headsets and the Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses.
- Apple recently teased its own smart glasses, stirring anticipation for a likely release after this year.
- Google also entered the arena, unveiling its AR glasses partnership with Luxottica in May 2025.
With these industry heavyweights investing billions into head-worn tech, Snap’s Specs will face some serious competition as it aims to carve out its space in the evolving market.
Looking Ahead
The smart glasses market is rapidly maturing, blending AR and AI to create immersive experiences that could redefine how we interact with technology daily. Snap’s move to make Specs lighter, smarter, and more developer-friendly could position it well for the widespread adoption of AR eyewear.
As 2026 approaches, tech enthusiasts and consumers alike will be watching closely to see how Snap’s Specs compare with offerings from Meta, Apple, Google, and others.
