The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has emerged as Maharashtra's highest-ranked university in the latest QS World University Rankings 2026, securing an impressive 566th position globally. Among public state universities across India, it holds the second spot, standing tall amid fierce competition.

The QS rankings evaluate universities worldwide through a meticulous assessment based on five core parameters, each weighted carefully to reflect institutional strengths:

Additionally, the 2026 edition introduced International Student Diversity as a new unweighted indicator to spotlight universities' global inclusivity.
SPPU's Performance Highlights: Research, Global Reach, and Employability
SPPU’s mark of excellence is particularly evident in its Research and Discovery score, driven by a remarkable surge in citations per faculty, which rocketed by 124 points compared to last year—even with a smaller faculty count. This underscores the university's influential academic output.
Its Global Engagement rating also climbed higher, buoyed by robust international research collaborations that enhance cross-border knowledge exchange.
Moreover, the university excels in providing a strong Learning Experience, benefiting from a favorable faculty-student ratio that fosters an enriching educational environment.
Not to be overlooked, the Employment Outcomes metric improved by 130 points, reflecting the university's growing reputation for producing career-ready graduates.
All factors combined yield an overall score of 29.3 out of 100 for SPPU on the QS scale.

Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, expressed optimism about future progress: "We remain dedicated to elevating our teaching standards, research capabilities, and global partnerships, aligning with the transformative goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Once we fill the 111 sanctioned teaching positions, we anticipate breaking into the top 500 worldwide."
Professor Parag Kalkar, Pro Vice-Chancellor, noted the university’s recent leap: "Achieving an overall rank of 566 signals significant advancement from the previous band of 631–640, highlighting our continuous improvements."
