Washington, May 29, 2025: Former US President Donald Trump expressed reservations about imposing additional sanctions on Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized his concern that new penalties might jeopardize efforts to reach a ceasefire.
"If I think I'm close to getting a deal, I don't want to screw it up by doing that," Trump remarked regarding the sanctions.
He also suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be deliberately stalling negotiations on a ceasefire amid the conflict. Trump voiced disappointment over recent Russian airstrikes, stating, "We're going to find out whether or not he's tapping us along or not, and if he is, we'll respond a little differently."
Trump's comments underscore the complexities surrounding diplomatic efforts and sanctions policies as international actors seek to resolve the war in Ukraine.
