Trump Criticizes Russia's Ouster from G8 as a Misstep
US President Donald Trump expressed strong opinions on the G7 summit, sharply criticizing the decision to exclude Russia from what was formerly the G8. Calling it a "serious mistake," Trump argued that keeping Russia engaged might have prevented the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
"The G7 used to be the G8. Roughly nine years ago, Russia was removed, which I believe was a major error. At that time, leaders including Barack Obama and Justin Trudeau opposed Russia’s participation. Had Russia remained part of the group, perhaps the current conflict wouldn't have erupted," Trump stated. He added, "If I had been president four years ago, this war wouldn’t be happening today."
Background: Russia’s Expulsion and Its Consequences
The G7 was formerly the G8 before Russia was expelled in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea and initial military actions in Ukraine. This expulsion symbolized increased global tensions and preceded the escalation that led to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Trump and Putin Discuss Regional Conflicts and Peace Prospects
Recently, Trump had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Among the topics discussed, the escalation of conflict between Iran and Israel took center stage. Trump shared on his social media platform that Putin called to wish him a happy birthday but primarily to discuss the Middle East tensions.
According to Trump, both leaders agreed that the war between Iran and Israel should end. He emphasized, "He feels, as do I, this war should stop. I also told him his war [in Ukraine] needs to end as well."
Ukraine Conflict and Prisoner Exchanges
Though not the main focus, their call briefly touched upon the Ukraine war and ongoing prisoner exchanges. Putin reportedly expressed interest in resuming peace talks after June 22, signaling potential diplomatic developments in the near future.
Reflection
Trump's remarks highlight continuing debates surrounding international alliances and conflict resolutions. His suggestion that Russia’s exclusion from the G8 was a strategic blunder opens discussions on the pathways not taken and the prospects for peace in a fractured global landscape.
