US Denounces China’s Military Actions Around Taiwan
The United States has sharply criticized China’s recent surge in military activity near Taiwan, calling the maneuvers "illegitimate" and "destabilizing." This condemnation comes as Beijing intensifies pressure just days before Taiwan's annual Han Kuang defense exercises.
Heightened Military Movements Around Taiwan
According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND), between Wednesday and Thursday morning, Taiwanese forces monitored 41 Chinese military aircraft and eight naval vessels operating in the vicinity of the island. Notably, 27 aircraft breached the median line of the Taiwan Strait, entering northern, central, and southwestern parts of Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
In response, Taiwan deployed patrol aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal missile systems to closely track these incursions and maintain surveillance over the encroaching forces.
US Calls for Stability Amid Rising Tensions
A spokesperson for the US State Department described China’s military moves as provocations that undermine regional stability and could potentially escalate tensions. The official emphasized that preserving peace in the Taiwan Strait is essential not only for regional security but also for broader global economic interests.
The United States reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan, pledging ongoing support across military, economic, and diplomatic fronts while urging China to cease its coercive tactics.
Additional Aerospace Activity Raises Alarm
Taiwan’s defense ministry also reported that on Wednesday evening, a Chinese rocket launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan crossed through parts of Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ. While the rocket traveled through outer space and did not pose an immediate threat, the Taiwanese military had issued alerts beforehand and monitored the rocket’s trajectory using advanced surveillance and intelligence systems.
Context: Beijing’s Pressure Campaign
Experts view the spike in Chinese military and aerospace activity as part of a coordinated pressure strategy targeting Taiwan, particularly as the island prepares for its most significant military drills of the year—the Han Kuang exercises. This annual event tests Taiwan’s defense readiness amid growing regional tensions.
