Washington, May 30, 2025: The United States government has announced a stringent new policy to prevent what it describes as the exploitation of American universities and theft of intellectual property by individuals connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized that the United States will not tolerate activities jeopardizing national security through unauthorized research appropriation. While Bruce refrained from specifying the number of affected Chinese students, she confirmed that visa revocations would be aggressively pursued against those deemed security risks.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio detailed that the scrutiny will focus particularly on students with affiliations to the CCP or those engaged in sensitive academic fields critical to national security. "The United States will not tolerate the CCP's exploitation of U.S. universities or theft of research and technologies that bolster its military capabilities, intelligence operations, or suppress dissent," Rubio stated.
This move follows previous restrictions implemented during the Trump administration, which halted new appointments for Chinese student and exchange visitor visas worldwide. When questioned about the resumption of visa processing, Bruce advised applicants to continue monitoring the official U.S. visa system for updates but offered no specific timeline for reopening appointments.
The crackdown reflects heightened concerns about protecting U.S. intellectual assets and sensitive technological research from foreign exploitation, especially related to China’s strategic ambitions.
