Dhaka, May 28, 2025: The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, representing the country's largest minority group, has strongly criticized the government for failing to arrest the perpetrators responsible for recent violent attacks on minority families in Dohor Moshiahati, Jashore.
On May 22, 2025, around 5:30 PM, Tariqul Islam, a Krishak Dal leader from the nearby Debadhi village, was murdered at the residence of Piltu Biswas in Dohor Moshiahati, Abhaynagar Upazila. Local sources revealed that Islam was discussing a fish enclosure lease shortly before the murder.
Approximately an hour after the murder, assailants targeted and violently attacked the homes of 20 minority families in the vicinity. The attackers looted valuables, vandalized properties, set houses ablaze, and physically assaulted family members, including women. This assault occurred as members of the Matua community were gathered at Mohitosh Biswas's residence for an annual religious festival, hosting around 700 attendees with music and ceremony.
The attacks left 20 families homeless. Important documents such as house deeds, national identity cards, and academic certificates were destroyed during the arson. Many male residents have since fled the area in fear. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council deplores the physical violence and destruction suffered by these minority families.
On May 27, 2025, a delegation from the Council, including Central Presidium Member Milon Kanti Dutta and Acting General Secretary Monindra Kumar Nath, visited the affected site. Following this visit, Nath met with Jashore's Superintendent of Police, urging prompt arrests, appropriate legal action against the criminals, and adequate compensation for victims. He also requested government assistance to recover or reissue the destroyed essential documents.
While one arrest has been made related to the murder of Tariqul Islam, no arrests have occurred regarding the attacks on minority families, prompting strong condemnation from the Unity Council. The group stresses that swift and decisive government intervention is crucial to ensure justice and restore community trust.
