Tragic Losses in Texas Due to Sudden Flash Flooding
Multiple fatalities have been reported in Texas following intense overnight rains that triggered severe flash flooding. Rescue teams are actively using boats to save stranded individuals as fast-moving waters submerge riverfront communities close to wildlife areas and campgrounds.
Central Kerr County experienced nearly 10 inches (25 cm) of rainfall within a few hours, dramatically swelling the Guadalupe River and causing catastrophic flash floods. The county's chief official, Judge Rob Kelly, confirmed casualties but refrained from providing exact figures, citing ongoing identification efforts.
"Many victims remain unidentified," Kelly explained during a press briefing. "One individual was found without any clothing or identification. We're still working to ascertain their identities."
Evacuations and Ongoing Rescue Operations
Authorities report conducting dozens of water rescues, with an undetermined number of people still unaccounted for amidst rising water levels. Initially, a flood watch anticipated isolated rainfall totals near 7 inches (17 cm), but rapidly escalating conditions prompted a flood warning affecting at least 30,000 residents.
When questioned about the unanticipated flood severity, Judge Kelly acknowledged the absence of an effective warning system. "No one anticipated this scale of flooding. We frequently experience floods, but this river valley is one of the most perilous in the country," he remarked.
State Response and Meteorological Insights
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced statewide assistance for storm-hit Hill Country communities, including Kerrville, Ingram, and Hunt. He urged residents to heed official advisories and avoid flooded roadways.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Fogarty highlighted alarming data from the Guadalupe River gauge near Hunt, which recorded a staggering 22-foot (6.7-meter) rise within two hours before malfunctioning after hitting nearly 29.5 feet (9 meters). "The river is likely higher; the gauge is submerged," Fogarty noted.
Communities at Risk and Search Efforts Intensify
The affected riverfront areas encompass various campsites and wildlife refuges, complicating the rescue operations. Texas Game Wardens continue searching the region, deploying additional boats to support the effort. Fogarty warned, "This kind of flooding strikes suddenly; the fast currents can overwhelm you before you even realize the danger."
Severe Storms Also Cause Fatalities in New Jersey
Meanwhile, central New Jersey has faced deadly thunderstorms resulting in at least three fatalities. Two men in Plainfield, aged 79 and 25, tragically died when a falling tree crushed their vehicle during the peak of the storm.
Mayor Adrian Mapp expressed deep sorrow, noting the event as a stark reminder of nature's power and life's fragility. The city canceled its Independence Day celebrations due to extensive damage from the storms, seeking to focus on recovery.
Widespread Storm Fallout Across Southern New England
The violent weather also caused power outages and downed trees throughout southern New England, accompanied by reports of heavy hail and hazardous road conditions, including vehicles sliding off roads in northeastern Connecticut.
