Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Condemns Terrorism at SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting
During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting held in Qingdao, China, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh delivered a compelling address underscoring India’s unwavering stance against terrorism. Emphasizing that peace and terror cannot coexist, Singh highlighted Operation Sindoor as a crucial demonstration of India's right to defend itself against terrorism.
Operation Sindoor: A Firm Response to Cross-Border Terrorism
Reflecting on the tragic Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, which claimed 26 lives, Singh reiterated India’s resolve to confront terror groups that find sanctuary across borders. Specifically pointing to the modus operandi similar to attacks orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to dismantling terrorist infrastructure.
“On 7th May 2025, India launched Operation Sindoor successfully to pre-empt and deter further cross-border terrorist attacks,” Singh stated, emphasizing the nation’s right to proactive defence measures.
Taking a Stand Against Terrorism Sponsorship and Double Standards
Minister Singh called on the international community to hold accountable those who sponsor and nurture terrorism for selfish gains. Highlighting the use of cross-border terrorism as a policy tool by certain states, he warned against tolerance of double standards.
“The SCO must not hesitate to openly criticize countries that provide shelter to terrorists and facilitate such activities,” Singh asserted, calling for unified condemnation of terrorism in all its forms.
Addressing Emerging Threats and Enhancing Regional Connectivity
Turning to technological challenges, Singh stressed the need to counteract terrorists’ use of drones and other advanced means for smuggling weapons and drugs. He pointed out that, “in today’s interconnected world, traditional borders are insufficient to block these complex threats.”
On a positive note, the Defence Minister highlighted India’s commitment to strengthening connectivity with Central Asia, which not only boosts trade but also fosters mutual trust among member nations. However, he emphasized adherence to the SCO charter’s principles, notably respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India’s Commitment to Afghanistan’s Stability and Development
Regarding Afghanistan, Singh reiterated India’s dedication to peace, security, and humanitarian assistance. He outlined India’s role as the region’s largest development partner, implementing capacity-building projects essential for Afghanistan’s progress.
Diplomatic Engagements Amid Regional Dynamics
During the summit, Singh was warmly received by Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun. Notably, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khwaja Asif also participated, underscoring the complex geopolitics within the SCO framework.
The two-day meeting, held on June 25 and 26, brought together member states including India, China, Russia, and several Central Asian countries, all focused on fostering regional stability through cooperation and dialogue.
