Fatal Drunk Driving Incident Involving Recent High School Graduates
A 18-year-old recently graduated from New York Mills High School is facing serious charges after a drunk driving accident resulted in the death of his friend. The crash occurred late at night, just days after their graduation ceremony.
Details of the Crash and Arrest
The driver, identified as Izak Schermerhorn, admitted to losing control of his pickup truck while driving under the influence of alcohol. According to the criminal complaint, Schermerhorn ‘‘fishtailed’’ and subsequently the vehicle rolled into a ditch, trapping and fatally injuring his passenger, 18-year-old Blake Unger, who was also a New York Mills graduate.
Emergency responders declared Unger dead at the scene.
Driver's Statements and Investigation Findings
During the investigation, Schermerhorn expressed deep remorse, repeatedly stating that ‘‘his life was over and all for a couple of drinks’’ and acknowledging that he ‘‘f***ed up.’p>Police observed significant tire ruts on the gravel road, indicating sliding before the truck flipped over. Schermerhorn also admitted to modifying his truck’s exhaust system and intentionally sliding the vehicle in an attempt to show off the sound, which led to the loss of control.
Alcohol Level and Legal Context
His blood alcohol concentration (BAC) tested at 0.13%, well over the legal limit of 0.08% for adults in Minnesota. Since Schermerhorn is under the legal drinking age of 21, any alcohol detected is illegal. He reported consuming three to four alcoholic beverages, specifically Mike’s Hard Lemonades, to celebrate graduation.
He further disclosed a prior struggle with alcoholism but claimed to have maintained sobriety for a year before this incident.
Legal Proceedings and Community Impact
Schermerhorn was released on $1,000 bail with conditions including counseling, maintaining sobriety, and avoiding further legal trouble. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 10.
Blake Unger was a dedicated athlete, participating in football, baseball, and wrestling. He achieved a milestone of 100 career wrestling victories earlier this year and was widely respected in his community. A memorial service has been planned for Wednesday, and a fund has been established to support Unger’s family during this difficult time.
