France to Host 2026 G7 Summit in Iconic Evian
French President Emmanuel Macron has officially revealed that the 2026 G7 summit will be held in the picturesque spa town of Evian, famed worldwide for its mineral water. The announcement came as Macron took part in the 2025 summit currently underway in Kananaskis, a resort nestled in the Canadian Rockies.
Evian: A Town Steeped in History and Prestige
Situated in the Alps near the Swiss border, Evian-les-Bains rose to prominence in the 19th century, attracting royalty and celebrities to its luxury resorts and healing springs. Beyond its reputation as a retreat, Evian holds historical significance as a stage for diplomacy. It was the site of the 1962 Evian Accords, which effectively ended the Algerian War and paved the way for Algeria’s independence from France.
Why Evian?
President Macron highlighted Evian’s “real willingness and commitment” to host a major international event of this scale. The choice reflects both the town’s capacity to accommodate global leaders and its symbolic stature in international affairs.
G7 Summit: A Rotating Platform for Global Dialogue
The G7 summit rotates annually among member nations: Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. France last held the summit in 2019, choosing the vibrant coastal city of Biarritz as its venue. Looking ahead, the United States is scheduled to host the 2027 summit.
Looking Back at the 2025 Summit
The current 2025 gathering in Kananaskis has focused on pressing global issues, such as trade tensions and support for Ukraine, exemplified by the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, developments in the Middle East, particularly Israel’s military actions against Iran, have also drawn significant attention.
What to Expect in 2026
With Evian’s blend of natural beauty, historical weight, and robust infrastructure, the 2026 summit is poised to provide a fitting backdrop for discussions among the world’s leading economies. It promises to be an event where diplomacy meets tradition against a stunning alpine setting.
