Trump Denies Macron’s Explanation for Early G7 Departure
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly disputed French President Emmanuel Macron’s assertion that his early exit from the G7 Summit in Canada was to pursue a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Trump branded Macron's claim as misguided on his social media platform, emphasizing that the reasoning was far more significant.
Trump’s Response to Macron’s Statement
On Truth Social, Trump stated, “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron of France mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘ceasefire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a ceasefire. Much bigger than that.” He further quipped that Macron often misinterprets events, whether intentionally or not.
Macron’s Initial Comments on Diplomatic Moves
Earlier in the day, Emmanuel Macron had indicated that the United States appeared ready to engage diplomatically with Iran. Speaking to reporters during the G7 summit, Macron revealed there had been an offer for a meeting and dialogue. He remarked, “If the United States can obtain a ceasefire, it is a very good thing.”
Context Behind Trump’s Early Return
The White House announced that Trump cut short his planned participation at the G7 summit by a day to return to Washington, citing the need to address pressing developments in the Middle East. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the president was initially scheduled to stay in Canada until late Tuesday but would return sooner to manage several critical issues.
Heightened Pressure on Iran Amid Rising Tensions
Trump’s early departure comes as the U.S. ramps up pressure on Iran to engage in diplomatic talks. During the summit, Trump urged citizens in Tehran to evacuate immediately, though he did not provide reasons for this call. This move underscores the tense atmosphere as diplomatic efforts intensify.
When interacting with reporters, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to broker a diplomatic deal with Iran, potentially bringing an end to the conflict that escalated over the past week.
