A Remarkable Turnaround for Pune’s ZP School
In a heartening story of resilience and community spirit, the Zilla Parishad (ZP) school located in Pune district’s Jalindarnagar village has emerged as a global finalist for the prestigious World’s Best School Prize 2025. The school, once on the verge of shutting down just a few years ago, now stands out as a beacon of educational innovation and collaboration.
From Near Closure to Thriving Institution
Back in 2021, the Jalindarnagar ZP school was struggling with a meager enrollment of only three to four students, threatening its very existence. However, a transformative journey began when the award-winning educator Dattatray Ware took charge as the school’s head. Since then, the school has experienced an inspiring revival, now educating 120 students from classes 1 through 8, with the support of just two full-time teachers.
How Community Power Reversed the Decline
Ware credits the local community’s proactive engagement as the catalyst for this turnaround. Villagers not only rallied behind the school but went as far as donating land to expand its infrastructure. Their involvement extends beyond support, as many residents—professional experts across various fields—volunteer to teach skill-based courses.
Currently, the school offers a comprehensive skill-based education program across 22 trades, blending practical knowledge with traditional academics. "We don’t wait for government provisions alone," Ware emphasizes. "With the community’s collaboration, we create opportunities and resources for our students."
Innovation in Education: Partnerships and Pedagogy
Building bridges with premier institutions, the school has established academic partnerships with renowned bodies such as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). These alliances expose students to the forefront of science and technology, nurturing curiosity and ambition.
Alongside this, the curriculum embraces advanced skill sets including foreign languages and higher-level mathematics. An inventive initiative called ‘Vishay Mitra’ (subject friend) enables peer-to-peer learning, where senior students mentor juniors in small groups. This model encourages open dialogue, allowing students to voice questions comfortably, avoiding the intimidation of larger classroom settings.
Global Recognition: World’s Best School Prize 2025
The World’s Best School Prize was launched as a response to the global education crisis, seeking to highlight schools making significant positive impacts both inside and outside the classroom. Alongside the Jalindarnagar ZP school, three other Indian schools from Karnataka, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have also earned spots as finalists across various categories.
The public voting phase for the award is open until July 9, with winners to be announced in October 2025. This recognition not only celebrates educational excellence but also underscores the power of community-driven change in transforming public education.
