Hamas Signals Readiness to Engage in Ceasefire Negotiations
Hamas has conveyed a willingness to participate constructively in ceasefire talks aimed at ending the prolonged conflict in Gaza. In an official statement, the group confirmed it had responded positively to a recent ceasefire proposal brokered by the United States, underscoring its preparedness for immediate negotiations.
After extensive consultations within its ranks and discussions with allied Palestinian factions, Hamas described its feedback to mediators as characterized by "a positive spirit," signaling a serious approach to establishing a ceasefire framework.
US Proposes a 60-Day Truce as Diplomatic Efforts Intensify
The United States president put forth what was called a "final proposal" outlining a 60-day truce, explicitly anticipating responses from both parties soon. The US president emphasized that Israel had already agreed to the essential terms needed to finalize this ceasefire initiative.
Despite this, an Israeli government spokesperson has yet to publicly address the proposal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, set to step down on Monday, continues to insist that any peace deal must include disarmament of Hamas — a condition the militant group rejects.
Key Concerns from Palestinian Allies and the Ground Reality
A Palestinian official from a Hamas-allied militant faction characterized the talks as showing promise but expressed lingering concerns over humanitarian aid delivery, the operation of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, and the timeline for Israel’s total withdrawal.
The Human Cost and Ongoing Hostilities
Despite diplomatic overtures, violence on the ground persists unabated. Over the last 24 hours, at least 138 Palestinians in Gaza have lost their lives according to local health authorities. A particularly tragic incident involved an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis around 2 a.m. Friday, striking a tent camp and killing 15 displaced civilians.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported targeting over 100 sites across Gaza within the same period, aiming at Hamas positions, weapons depots, and missile launchers, signaling ongoing military operations.
Calls for Action and Hostage Concerns
Earlier this week, the US president expressed intent to apply firm pressure on the Israeli Prime Minister to advance ceasefire negotiations, highlighting hopes for progress in the coming days to secure the release of hostages.
In Tel Aviv, relatives of hostages held in Gaza marked US Independence Day with a poignant demonstration outside the US Embassy, featuring a symbolic Sabbath table with 50 empty chairs representing those still held captive, urging the US administration to finalize a truce.
