India Set to Record 117.5 Million Tons Wheat Production by June 2025

India is poised to strengthen its position as a global food basket with a projected record wheat production of 117.5 million metric tons by June 2025, according to the latest estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture.

This forecast surpasses the central government's March projection of 115.4 million tons and improves upon the 113.3 million tons produced in 2024, establishing India as the world's second-largest wheat producer after China.

Rice production is also expected to rise significantly, with estimates at 149 million metric tons for 2025, up from 137.8 million tons in the previous year. Together, these gains are anticipated to propel the total food grains output to 354 million tons, an increase from 332.3 million tons recorded in 2024.

The robust wheat harvest is replenishing domestic stockpiles rapidly, enabling India to meet internal demand without resorting to imports, contrary to prior market speculation. This development is likely to ease concerns about global supply pressures.

Government Initiatives to Boost Food Production

During the 2025 budget presentation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the government's commitment to establishing India as the world's food basket. Notably, the launch of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management in Bihar aims to invigorate food processing activities, particularly in the Eastern region.

Investment and Growth in Agriculture

The government has markedly increased its agricultural budget from Rs 11,915.22 crore in 2008-09 to Rs 1,22,528.77 crore in 2024-25. Enhanced productivity and revised Minimum Support Prices have contributed to improved farmer incomes and sustained production growth.

According to data from the Press Information Bureau, India’s foodgrain production has steadily increased from 204.6 million tonnes in 2004-05 to an estimated 332.3 million tonnes in 2023-24, reflecting successful policy support and technological advancements.

These developments highlight India’s growing self-reliance in food production and its ambition to emerge as a pivotal global food supplier.
