As the Narendra Modi government celebrates 11 years in power, Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, has voiced a scathing critique of its performance. Kharge's assessment highlights a series of unmet promises, including rising unemployment and unfulfilled commitments to farmers and youth, while emphasizing the government's failures in addressing economic inequalities and protecting marginalized communities.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Kharge reflected on the BJP’s tenure which began with Modi's assurance of 'achhe din' (good days). He pointed out that the realities faced by citizens starkly contrast with this promise, asserting that every stratum of society is grappling with economic and social challenges, effectively transforming the notion of ‘good days’ into a ‘dreadful dream.’
Listing his criticisms, Kharge noted:
- Youth: The promise of creating two crore jobs annually remains unfulfilled, with significant job losses instead.
- Farmers: Despite promises of doubling incomes, farmers have faced aggression from law enforcement rather than support.
- Women: Reservation conditions are limited, and safety is alarmingly compromised.
- Weaker Sections: Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minorities are subjected to severe atrocities, diminishing their involvement in society.
- Economy: Inflation is at an all-time high, unemployment is rising, and consumer spending has stagnated.
- Make in India: The initiative is struggling, exacerbating inequality across the nation.
- Foreign Relations: While aspiring to be a global leader, India’s relationships with other nations have deteriorated.
- Democracy: The institutions of democracy face threats, including the misuse of investigative agencies and a decline in institutional autonomy.
Kharge's remarks come in light of the BJP’s unbroken rule since 2014, with Modi securing victories in the 2019 and 2024 general elections. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh characterized this milestone as an 'undeclared emergency'. Modi's ascent to the prime ministership on May 26, 2014, was heralded with proclamations of a victorious India and a promise of better days ahead.
