Tensions Escalate as Iran Threatens US Military Bases
Iran has issued a stark warning that it could target US military bases in the region if nuclear negotiations fail and conflict arises. The threat was made by Iran's Defence Minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, who stated that all US bases are within Iran’s reach and would be boldly targeted should hostilities be forced upon Tehran.
Upcoming Nuclear Talks Face Uncertainty
The warning comes just days before the anticipated sixth round of nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran, with Washington aiming to hold talks this Thursday, while Tehran expects talks on Sunday in Oman. Iran is reportedly preparing a counter-proposal following its rejection of the latest US offer.
US Leadership Expresses Growing Doubts
Former US President Donald Trump expressed increasing skepticism about reaching a nuclear deal with Iran. In a recent podcast, Trump said he is now less confident than he was months ago that Iran will agree to curb its uranium enrichment program.
“I don’t know if they’ll shut down their nuclear program,” Trump said. “I did think so, but now I’m less confident. Something has changed for them.”
He also accused Iranian negotiators of deliberately stalling progress, adding that despite tough talks, he doubts Iran’s enthusiasm for a genuine agreement.
US Commitment to Preventing Nuclear Weapons
Trump reaffirmed the US’s firm stance against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, with or without a formal agreement in place. He stressed the preference for resolving the issue peacefully without warfare but acknowledged the complexities involved.
Iran’s Position and Missile Program
Iran continues to insist its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes such as energy and scientific research, denying any ambitions to develop nuclear arms.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi expressed optimism on social media about the possibility of reaching a rapid agreement ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program as talks resume.
Nevertheless, a key obstacle remains Iran’s ballistic missile program. Defence Minister Nasirzadeh confirmed a recent missile test featuring a two-ton warhead and made clear that Iran would reject any limitations on its missile capabilities.
This position aligns with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's earlier calls for strengthening Iran’s military, including its missile arsenal.
Background: US Withdrawal from 2015 Nuclear Deal
During his presidency, Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement, arguing it was too weak and ineffective. That deal had imposed limitations on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for easing international sanctions.
Looking Ahead
As negotiations approach, both sides face a challenging road ahead. The international community watches closely, hoping for a diplomatic path that prevents conflict and ensures regional stability.
