Recovery of Hostage Bodies Highlights Human Toll of October 7 Attack
Israeli forces have announced the recovery of the bodies of two hostages, Judih Weinstein, 70, and Gad Haggai, 72, who were taken during the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas militants. The couple was found in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, the military confirmed.
Background on the Hostages
Judih Weinstein and Gad Haggai were residents of Kibbutz Nir Oz near the Gaza border. The couple was reportedly out for an early morning walk close to their home when the attack occurred. Weinstein managed to make an emergency call, reporting that both she and her husband had been shot during the assault.
Born in New York, Weinstein dedicated her life to education, working as an English teacher for children with special needs at Kibbutz Nir Oz. She was also known for teaching meditation techniques to young people coping with anxiety stemming from rocket attacks from Gaza. Gad Haggai was a retired chef and jazz musician.
The couple is survived by two sons, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
Impact of the October 7 Attack
The assault resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, primarily civilians, and the abduction of 251 hostages. Current reports indicate that 56 hostages remain captive.
Israeli forces have thus far rescued eight hostages alive and recovered multiple bodies. Other hostages have been released through ceasefire negotiations or other arrangements.
Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Consequences
The military campaign responding to the attack has had devastating effects on Gaza’s population. According to health authorities, over 54,000 Palestinians have lost their lives, largely women and children. The offensive has displaced nearly 90 percent of Gaza’s 2 million residents and inflicted widespread destruction across the region.
Official Statements
In response to the recovery of the bodies, Israeli Prime Minister expressed his condolences, stating, "Together with all the citizens of Israel, my wife and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the dear families. Our hearts ache for the most terrible loss. May their memory be blessed."
