Downtown Los Angeles Faces Curfew After Days of Protests
In response to escalating protests over recent federal immigration raids, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency and imposed an overnight curfew in downtown Los Angeles. The measure took effect Tuesday evening, spanning from 8 PM to 6 AM and covering a one-square-mile area surrounded by the 5, 10, and 110 freeways.
Reason Behind the Curfew
Mayor Bass addressed the media at an evening briefing, stating, “I have declared a local emergency and issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting.” She urged those who do not live or work in the affected area to steer clear, warning that law enforcement will strictly enforce the curfew and prosecute violators.
Protests Sparked by Immigration Raids
The curfew follows five days of unrest after federal agents conducted immigration raids targeting the Westlake District, downtown, and South Los Angeles neighborhoods. Since Friday, confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement have intensified, resulting in nearly 200 arrests. On Monday night alone, authorities reported at least 23 businesses looted.
Curfew Exemptions and Enforcement
The curfew officially exempts residents, workers, credentialed media personnel, and people experiencing homelessness, according to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. Despite the restrictions and a fortified security presence, many protesters remain determined to continue their demonstrations, calling attention to what they describe as an unfair crackdown on immigrant communities.
National Response and Political Tensions
The turmoil has sparked national headlines. In a controversial move, the federal government deployed thousands of California National Guard troops alongside 700 U.S. Marines to secure federal buildings. This deployment occurred without the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom, igniting political friction.
Governor Newsom condemned the action on social media, stating, “Commandeering a state's National Guard without consulting the Governor of that state is illegal and immoral. California will be taking him to court.” He also criticized the federal administration for intensifying tensions during an already volatile situation.
Looking Ahead
As curfew orders remain in place, the city grapples with maintaining order while addressing the underlying grievances fueling the protests. With unrest persisting, authorities are tasked with balancing public safety and the rights of protesters amid a deeply divided political landscape.
