A Shocking Serial Sex Offender Sentenced to Life
A former PhD student in London has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 24 years, for drugging, raping, and secretly filming dozens of women. The 28-year-old man, once enrolled at University College London, stands accused of one of the most disturbing serial sex offenses in recent UK history.
Details of the Crimes and Investigation
The offender lured women to his apartment by inviting them to study sessions or social drinks. Once there, he would drug and sexually assault them, frequently recording the attacks with concealed cameras. Law enforcement officials confirmed his conviction in March for raping 10 women—three in London and seven in China—but police believe his total number of victims could be as high as 60, spanning from 2019 to 2024.
Since the conviction, over 20 additional women have come forward, with authorities actively working to identify other individuals featured in 58 rape videos seized from the suspect’s devices. Many victims, predominantly of Chinese descent, are seen and heard pleading for mercy before losing consciousness, adding a chilling dimension to the case.
Disturbing Evidence Captured on Camera
In one harrowing video, a victim can be heard saying, “I really don’t want … I beg you, don’t do this.” The man responds, “Don’t push me, it’s pointless … The sound insulation here is very good.” Such footage was instrumental in securing the conviction and has spurred ongoing investigations.
Arrest and Court Proceedings
The perpetrator was initially reported to the Metropolitan Police in November 2023. After the initial complaint was dismissed, he traveled back to China but was arrested upon his return to the UK in January 2024. A police search of his residence uncovered luxury goods and a box suspected to contain mementos from his victims.
During the trial, the accused appeared composed, yet unsettlingly frank about his disturbing sexual preferences, stating a preference for pornography involving unresponsive or unconscious women. He was convicted on 28 counts, including rape, false imprisonment, voyeurism, possession of illegal pornography, and possession of drugs intended to facilitate sexual offenses.
Police Response and Call for Victims to Come Forward
Commander Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police emphasized the significance of the conviction: “Thanks to the exceptional efforts of our officers and prosecutors, a dangerous and cowardly offender faces a lengthy prison sentence. We hope this brings some comfort to the victims who have endured immense pain.”
Authorities have urged any other women who fear they might be victims to come forward. They assured all survivors would receive compassionate treatment, emphasizing respect and care during the reporting process.
Manipulation and Deception Through Social Media
The offender reportedly used social media platforms and dating apps to contact women, often portraying himself as a charming and well-mannered gentleman. One victim described him as kind in public, masking his true nature. Notably, no prior complaints surfaced during his earlier academic tenure at Queen’s University Belfast, but police encouraged anyone with relevant concerns to engage with law enforcement.
Ongoing Investigations and Support for Victims
The police investigation continues as detectives work to uncover further victims and bring full justice. The case has raised awareness about the risks posed by predators exploiting trust and digital platforms to harm vulnerable individuals.
