India and Croatia Unite in Firm Stand Against Terrorism
During a historic visit by India’s Prime Minister to Croatia—the first of its kind—both nations have joined forces to denounce terrorism in all its facets. They emphasized the urgent need to dismantle terrorist networks, eliminate their safe havens, and ensure rapid accountability for perpetrators.
Joint Statement Highlights Zero-Tolerance Policy
Issued on June 18, the statement followed high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. Both leaders reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance against terrorism, addressing threats that extend across borders and transcend national boundaries.
The statement called for coordinated global efforts to disrupt terrorist financing, underscoring multinational platforms such as the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). It condemned the use of terrorism as a state proxy and advocated strong action against individuals and entities designated by the UN and EU, including those under the UN Security Council's 1267 sanctions regime.
Addressing Regional Security Concerns and Solidarity
Expressing concern over the escalating tensions in West Asia, the two leaders urged de-escalation between Israel and Iran. Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged Croatia’s support following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22.
“Both nations unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in every form, calling for accountability and a consistent global approach,” stated the joint declaration. The leaders emphasized the importance of fully implementing the UN Global Counterterrorism Strategy and relevant international conventions.
Enhancing Cooperation and Connectivity
Beyond security, India and Croatia highlighted prospects to deepen partnership in maritime and trade sectors. Both countries agreed to explore Croatia’s potential role as a Mediterranean gateway to Central Europe.
They committed to expanding collaboration in ports and shipping, acknowledging their rich maritime heritages. The discussion also touched on the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) initiative, aimed at boosting regional connectivity.
Respect for international maritime laws, particularly UNCLOS, and principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom of navigation were reaffirmed. These commitments are seen as vital to fostering maritime security and global stability.
Shared Vision on Global Peace and Reforms
The two leaders exchanged views on pressing global issues, including the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the pursuit of a just and lasting peace grounded in respect for international law and sovereignty.
Both India and Croatia underscored their dedication to a free, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, built on mutual respect and adherence to international law.
Multilateralism and a rules-based global order featured prominently, with calls for meaningful reforms in the United Nations system. Specifically, they advocated expanding the UN Security Council to enhance inclusivity, transparency, and effectiveness in line with contemporary geopolitical realities.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening India-Croatia Partnership
Concluding the visit, Prime Ministers Modi and Plenković expressed optimism about the outcomes and committed to broadening the scope of cooperation between their countries across various sectors.
This landmark engagement signals a deepening bond not only in security matters but also in economic and diplomatic arenas, setting the stage for a robust bilateral relationship moving forward.
