Milwaukee Honors Fallen Officer Kendall Corder Following Ambush
Milwaukee is mourning the loss of Officer Kendall Corder, a dedicated six-year veteran of the police force who succumbed to injuries sustained during an ambush while responding to a call. The 32-year-old officer was shot on June 26 in an alley near North 25th Street and West Garfield Avenue, and passed away nearly three days later.
A Hero’s Final Moments
Officer Corder and his partner were answering a call involving a subject firing a weapon when they were unexpectedly fired upon. Despite their bravery, both officers were hit before they could return fire. Corder suffered severe wounds to his chest and upper arm, including critical injuries to his heart.
The other officer, 29-year-old Christopher McCray, sustained injuries to his foot and back but was released from the hospital shortly after. Corder, however, remained on life support until his passing on June 29.
Community and Leadership Reflect on Loss
At a solemn press conference near Froedtert Hospital, Mayor Cavalier Johnson reflected on Corder’s dedication: “He died doing what he loved to do. His commitment to protect and serve is admirable.”
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman relayed the family’s message, emphasizing how proud Officer Corder was of his role within the Department. He called on the community to send their prayers to the officer’s family and the police force alike.
“We have lost someone who loved his career and looked forward to impacting public safety,” Norman shared.
A City United in Grief and Tribute
Following the announcement, a procession formed from Froedtert Hospital to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. The route was lined by roughly 80 uniformed officers, alongside fire trucks draped in American flags. Many held back tears as they saluted the fallen comrade.
Local residents also gathered quietly, paying respects to a man they recognized from his work in their neighborhoods. Terry Hale shared, “It's a shame we continually face loss like this. It weighs on our hearts.”
Details on the Suspect and Investigation
Authorities apprehended 22-year-old Tremaine Jones shortly after the shooting, charging him with multiple offenses related to the attack. He currently remains in custody on approximately $200,000 bail. The investigation into the incident continues.
Police Union Responds
Alex Ayala, president of the Milwaukee Police Association, described the shooting as an “ambush” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“Officer Corder and his partner faced danger fearlessly, responding to a domestic violence call involving a suspect with a gun. Their bravery embodies the spirit of all our officers,” Ayala stated. He reassured that despite the tragedy, officers remain steadfast in their duty to protect the Milwaukee community.
The Enduring Legacy of Officer Kendall Corder
Officer Corder’s colleagues and community members have expressed that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. His unwavering commitment to law enforcement and public safety leaves a lasting impact on Milwaukee.
Police Chief Norman encouraged officers and citizens alike to support one another through this difficult time with love and unity.
“Do not let anything divide us, but rather let love and solidarity be our guide,” he urged.
The tragic loss marks the sixth Milwaukee officer to die in the line of duty since 2018, highlighting the risks law enforcement professionals face every day.
