Hundreds Gather to Honor Melissa and Mark Hortman
On a heartfelt Saturday morning, hundreds of mourners came together at Minneapolis' Basilica of St. Mary to pay their respects to former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert. The private Catholic funeral service was presided over by Father Dan Griffith and attended by notable figures including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who also served as a pallbearer, and a close family friend, Robin Ann Williams.
Governor Walz’s Tribute: A Celebration of Lifelong Dedication
Governor Walz delivered a moving eulogy, calling Melissa Hortman "the most consequential speaker in Minnesota history" and recalling her as a close friend and mentor. Reflecting on their joint commitment to public service, he emphasized how the couple's work positively impacted millions of Minnesotans.
He highlighted Melissa’s exceptional leadership, sharp wit, and fervent dedication to helping others - qualities mirrored in Mark, whom she met over 30 years ago during a mentorship event in Washington, D.C. Walz painted an intimate picture of their life together, from Mark’s Monday night pool games to Melissa lovingly tending her garden, underscoring the warmth and humanity behind their public roles.
Urging attendees to honor the Hortmans’ legacy, Walz called for renewed civility and empathy in politics and life. "Let’s not remember them for the way they died, but for how they lived — with joy, passion, respect, and humility," he said.
Community and Family Remember the Hortmans’ Warmth
Father Griffith shared that the couple’s Brooklyn Park home, affectionately called the "Hortman Hotel," was known for its open-door hospitality where everyone felt welcome. Williams echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the cherished nature of the Hortmans’ social gatherings and the enduring hope for joy even in sorrow.
The couple's son, Colin Hortman, joined by his fiancée, recited the Prayer of St. Francis, a poignant touch reflecting Melissa’s personal faith.
Prominent Leaders Among Attendees
The funeral drew numerous dignitaries, including former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris, who were specially invited by Governor Walz on behalf of the Hortmans’ children. Though unable to attend in person, Senator Amy Klobuchar praised their lifelong dedication to service and encouraged the public to honor their memory through acts of kindness.
Lying in State: A Historic Tribute
The day before the funeral, Melissa and Mark Hortman, alongside Gilbert, lay in state at the Minnesota Capitol Rotunda — Melissa becoming the first woman ever to receive this honor. Thousands paid their respects there, reflecting the widespread impact of the couple’s commitment to bipartisan cooperation and community welfare.
The Tragedy and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
The loss of the Hortmans stems from a tragic, politically motivated attack at their home on June 14. Vance Boelter, 57, has been charged with their murders, along with attempted murder charges in a related shooting of another Democratic lawmaker and his wife. Boelter remains in federal custody awaiting trial and faces severe penalties if convicted.
Authorities described the manhunt for Boelter—Minnesota's largest ever—as a massive coordinated effort involving nearly 200 officers, including multiple SWAT teams. Investigators also discovered that Boelter maintained a hit list targeting other politicians.
Following the attacks, Boelter’s wife issued a statement expressing shock and sorrow, emphasizing that the violence contradicts their family’s values.
Honoring the Hortmans’ Legacy Through Community Action
Their children, Sophie and Colin, have encouraged Minnesotans to honor their parents’ memory through simple acts of kindness: baking, planting trees, or spending time with pets—small gestures that embody the couple's generous spirit.
