Kannampadi Welcomes Three New Libraries to Foster Reading Culture
In the heart of the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kannampadi tribal settlement is experiencing a transformation through the power of books. Three libraries have recently been established in Memari, Kathitheppan, and Kollathikkavu, aimed at nurturing a passion for reading among the tribal community and students.
Championing Literacy in Remote Tribal Settlements
These libraries are a collaborative effort led by three local eco-development committees, with the Forest Department spearheading the initiative. With support from the State Forest Development Agency, books valued at ₹1 lakh have been procured. Each library, known collectively as Thaliru, embraces the inspiring motto: 'Reading is the true addiction.'
Located about 12 kilometers from Upputhara near Kattappana, Kannampadi consists of 12 tribal settlements with 623 families. The three new libraries will currently serve six of these settlements, with plans underway to extend this reach further.
Diverse Collection Meets Diverse Needs
Given the isolated setting deep within the forest, access to books has long been a challenge for the residents. The library in Memari boasts a varied collection, including children's literature, novels, study guides, short stories, and travelogues, catering to readers of all ages.
Officials are committed to expanding the collections, ensuring the libraries remain vibrant hubs for learning and exploration.
Beyond Books: Empowering Tribal Students
The Forest Department plans to enhance these spaces with newspapers and periodicals to keep the community informed and engaged with current events. Furthermore, specialized coaching sessions are in the pipeline for tribal students preparing for Public Service Commission (PSC) examinations, with expert trainers slated to support these efforts.
Local residents will also be trained and appointed as librarians, creating employment opportunities and ensuring the libraries are well-managed and welcoming.
An Enthusiastic Community Response
The libraries have already sparked enthusiasm among children and students visiting the facilities. To mark this milestone, the libraries will officially open their doors on National Reading Day, June 19. A formal inauguration ceremony is anticipated later this month.
This initiative represents a critical step in bridging educational gaps and fostering a culture of literacy in this remote tribal region, lighting up the world of books for Kannampadi’s residents.
