Pakistani Special Forces Officer Linked to Abhinandan Varthaman's Capture Killed
A Pakistani special forces officer, who earlier claimed responsibility for capturing Indian pilot Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman during the 2019 aerial skirmish, has reportedly been killed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Major Syed Muiz and the 2019 India-Pakistan Air Conflict
Major Syed Muiz, serving with Pakistan's elite Special Service Group's 6th Commando Battalion, was fatally attacked during clashes in the Sarargoha area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The TTP, a militant Islamist group operating along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, claimed responsibility for his death.
The incident brings back memories of the high-tension aerial combat between India and Pakistan in February 2019. During this conflict, then Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman became a national hero in India after successfully shooting down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet while flying the older MiG-21 aircraft.
However, during the dogfight, Varthaman's aircraft strayed into Pakistan-controlled territory in Kashmir, where his plane was hit, forcing him to eject and land behind enemy lines. He was captured by Pakistani forces and held for nearly 60 hours before international pressure compelled Pakistan to release him.
Backdrop: Pulwama Attack and Balakot Airstrikes
These aerial hostilities were part of a larger retaliation by India following the deadly Pulwama terror attack in early 2019. A suicide bomber driving a Maruti Suzuki Eeco van attacked a convoy of Indian paramilitary forces, killing 40 soldiers. The attack was later linked to the Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed.
In response, India launched the Balakot airstrikes, deploying a fleet of Mirage jets across the Line of Control into Pakistan territory to target terrorist training camps associated with JeM. The precision operation lasted less than 20 minutes.
