Russia Reaffirms Mediation Offer Amid Iran-Israel Conflict
Russia has reiterated its willingness to act as a mediator in the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. The Kremlin confirmed that its prior proposal—which involves storing Iran's enriched uranium on Russian soil and converting it into fuel for civilian nuclear reactors—is still under consideration as a potential step to ease the crisis.
Proposed Solution to Nuclear Concerns
Tehran insists on its right to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes. However, its rapidly advancing uranium enrichment program has triggered apprehension across the West and Gulf nations about Iran's potential ambitions to develop nuclear weapons.
In response, Russia's plan involves removing enriched uranium from Iran and processing it into reactor fuel, thereby aiming to reduce fears surrounding Iran's nuclear activities and defuse regional tensions.
Kremlin's Cautious Optimism Amid Conflict
Speaking on the matter, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that although the proposal remains relevant, recent hostilities have complicated the situation significantly.
“This proposal remains on the table, it remains relevant. But, of course, with the outbreak of hostilities, the situation has become seriously complicated,” Peskov said.
Calls for Addressing Root Causes to Deescalate Crisis
Peskov emphasized that Russia is open to mediating if needed but stressed that lasting peace requires tackling the fundamental issues that sparked the conflict. He also criticized the ongoing military strikes for exacerbating the crisis beyond manageable levels.
“Russia remains ready to do everything necessary to eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” he commented. “But the situation is escalating more than seriously, and, of course, this is not affecting the situation for the better.”
Kremlin Responds to Israeli Statements on Regime Change
When asked about Israeli Prime Minister's recent remarks suggesting that military pressure could lead to regime change in Iran, Peskov pointed out that such comments have been noticed by Moscow.
He condemned actions that have led to the dangerous escalation of tensions in the region and noted that these military operations have triggered increased unity within Iranian society, likely strengthening their resolve.
“We condemn those actions that have led to such a dangerous escalation of tension in the region,” Peskov said. “We also note a significant consolidation of society in Iran against the background of the bombing that is currently being carried out by the Israeli side.”
