Indian Climber Stranded at 17,000 Feet on Mount Denali
Shaikh Hassan Khan, an accomplished climber from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is currently stuck at the 17,000-foot base camp on Mount Denali in Alaska, North America’s highest peak. Shaikh holds the distinction of being the first Keralite to have scaled the highest summits on all seven continents.
Shashi Tharoor Seeks Government Intervention
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, representing Thiruvananthapuram, has urgently called upon External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for assistance. In a heartfelt appeal, Tharoor expressed deep concern over Shaikh’s precarious situation and urged Indian diplomatic channels to coordinate swiftly with American authorities to facilitate a rescue.
On social media, Tharoor described Shaikh as a "heroic young explorer," emphasizing his courage, discipline, and dedication to causes extending beyond personal achievements.
Operation Sindoor: Beyond a Climbing Feat
Tharoor highlighted that Shaikh’s mountaineering expedition is part of a broader initiative called “Operation Sindoor,” which aims to honor Indian military personnel and promote peace worldwide. The MP has voiced confidence that, with timely and coordinated efforts between India and the United States, Shaikh will be brought to safety.
Achievements Behind the Expedition
Shaikh Hassan Khan has previously scaled notable peaks including Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, where he planted the Indian flag in November 2024. Other mountains he conquered include:
- Aconcagua (South America)
- Mount Vinson (Antarctica)
- Mount Elbrus (Europe)
- Mount Denali (North America)

Additionally, he has summited Ojos del Salado, recognized as the world's highest active volcano.
Shaikh’s overarching goal through this "7 Summits Expedition" is to raise global awareness about climate change and foster international harmony.
Call for Urgent Rescue Efforts
With unpredictable mountain conditions heightening the risks, the plea for immediate and effective rescue actions has gathered widespread attention. The community and government alike watch closely, hoping for a safe resolution to Shaikh’s challenging ordeal atop Mount Denali.
