Actress Shivangi Verma has spoken out ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, expressing concern over the growing acceptance of smoking among young people. She challenges the notion that smoking is 'cool' or a symbol of confidence.
“Sadly, smoking has become a 'cool' tag, especially for the younger crowd, as if it’s a badge to appear more bold or accepted,” Shivangi said. “But truly, there’s nothing admirable about harming your body. Real confidence comes from embracing who you are, not from holding a cigarette.”
She noted that smoking, once more discreet, is now evident across various demographics and public areas, influenced by changing media portrayals and peer behaviors. “We must be cautious about normalizing such habits in our social environment,” she added.
On the depiction of smoking in media, Shivangi emphasized her personal responsibility. “I prefer to avoid scenes involving tobacco unless it is essential to the story. While health warnings during smoking scenes are helpful, they don’t suffice,” she explained. “Awareness is more effective when accompanied by honest conversations and storytelling that highlights the real harms.”
Regarding anti-smoking advertisements, she acknowledged their impact when illustrating the struggles caused by tobacco addiction but stressed the importance of consistent messaging.
Addressing the rising popularity of hookah, especially among youth, Shivangi cautioned against its perception as a harmless or trendy activity. “It’s important to dispel the myth that hookah is ‘fun’ or ‘fancy’,” she urged.
In conclusion, Shivangi advocated for prioritizing health and self-respect over unhealthy trends. She has appeared in shows like Tera Ishq Mera Fitoor, Choti Sarrdaarni, and Badass Ravi Kumar, with upcoming projects including Gaurishankar Gauharganj Wale.
