Trump Dismisses Greta Thunberg’s Claim of Being Kidnapped by Israel
US President Donald Trump has responded skeptically to climate activist Greta Thunberg’s allegation that Israeli authorities kidnapped her after intercepting the humanitarian aid ship she was aboard en route to Gaza.
The 22-year-old Swedish activist was part of a crew attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip when Israeli naval forces seized the boat and diverted it to the port city of Ashdod. According to Israel's foreign ministry, Thunberg and the other passengers were subsequently deported to Sweden via France.
Controversial Remarks Stir Attention
During a press briefing, when asked about Thunberg's claim of kidnapping, Trump remarked, "She said she was kidnapped by Israel? I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg." He went on to describe her as a "young, angry person" and suggested that she might benefit from anger management classes.
Trump: "She’s a young, angry person. I don’t know if it’s real anger, it’s hard to believe. But I saw what happened. I think she has to go to anger management class — that’s my primary recommendation for her."
Humanitarian Aid Mission Intercepted
The yacht, named Madleen and flagged by Britain, was carrying symbolic supplies such as rice and baby formula. This mission was organized by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) to raise international awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Shortly before the vessel was seized, the coalition released a video featuring Thunberg explaining their predicament. She alleged they were intercepted and "kidnapped in international waters by Israeli occupational forces or forces that support Israel." She also called for the Swedish government to exert pressure for their release.
Israel’s Response and Current Situation
Israeli officials confirmed that the boat carrying 12 individuals, including Thunberg, had docked at Ashdod port. They are undergoing medical checks to verify their health status. Israel, however, dismissed the operation as an attempt at a publicity stunt, referring to the yacht as a "selfie yacht."
Global Reactions and Implications
The incident has sparked debate over the Israeli blockade of Gaza and the involvement of high-profile activists in humanitarian efforts. While some view the interception as a necessary security measure, others criticize it as an act that undermines aid delivery and stifles international solidarity.
