Trump Acknowledges Challenges in Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Former US President Donald Trump recently took a rare critical stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as "misguided" and suggesting Putin might harbor ambitions extending beyond Ukraine. Speaking after the NATO Summit, Trump admitted that resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has proven far more complicated than anticipated.
Putin Seen as More Difficult Than Expected
During a press briefing, Trump conceded that Putin has been the tougher negotiator in any attempt to mend the frayed relations between Russia and Ukraine. When pressed on whether Putin aims to invade other countries beyond Ukraine, Trump responded cautiously: "It's possible. I mean, it's possible."
Comparing Challenges with Other Leaders
Trump also mentioned encountering difficulties in dealing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reflecting on his 2024 campaign promise of settling the conflict within 24 hours. He expressed surprise at the scale and complexity of the war, saying, "It's been more difficult than other wars."
Trump’s Perspective on Putin’s Intentions
Despite the obstacles, Trump conveyed a belief that Putin wishes to end the conflict, viewing the situation as a significant burden for the Russian leader. He stated, "I know one thing: He'd like to settle, he'd like to get out of this thing. It's a mess for him." Trump described Putin as a person who has been misguided in his decisions and ambitions, expressing his hope for a peaceful resolution that has yet to materialize.
